Where does orange wine come from?

Wine historians believe that orange wine was first discovered in 6000 BC in Caucasus, the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Nowadays, Italy and Slovenia have gained popularity as high-quality orange wine producers.

How is orange wine made?

One of the most interesting things about orange wine is that it's not made from oranges, believe it or not. Instead, it is produced from white wine grape varieties that have been left to ferment with their skins on. So, essentially, orange wine is made using the red winemaking process, using white grapes. The skin of the grapes is the soul of orange wine. It’s the skin that gives the wine it’s orange huge and unique flavour.

What does orange wine taste like?

Orange wine tends to be full-bodied with more complex flavours similar to red wine but with the same refreshing qualities as whites. As the name suggests, many orange wines are citrusy in taste, but the flavour profile can really vary. The citrus notes can be more than tangy orange flavours, these notes can range from zesty lemon to bitter grapefruit. Some orange wines can also exhibit hints of spice, like clove, ginger and white pepper.
